The villain carries a daily soap. Here is why some are remembered for years and others are forgotten in a month.
In a daily serial, the antagonist does more work than the lead. The protagonist reacts; the antagonist creates the events that force the story forward. When a show sags, the problem is usually the villain.
A good antagonist wants something specific
The strongest serial villains have a concrete goal: control of the family business, a marriage they were denied, a property, a place in the household. The goal explains every move they make, and viewers can anticipate their next step. Weak antagonists simply want the heroine to suffer, which gives the writers nothing to build with.
They should be competent
A villain whose schemes fail every week trains the audience to stop worrying. The most memorable antagonists in Indian television win regularly, sometimes for months, and force the protagonist to grow in order to counter them. Tension requires the possibility of loss.
